The long presence comes first: since 1999, Petra Unger has worked as winemaker at Weingut Petra Unger in Furth, Austria, holding the estate’s name and its cellar decisions in the same hands. Her role is not separated from ownership or from the family ground around Furth bei Göttweig. The job sits close to the vines, the fermenting fruit, the bottlings, and the slow accumulation of judgment that a small estate asks of its maker.

The line reaches back before her tenure. The winery’s own history turns on the purchase of Ried Hinters Kirchl in 1964, a single vineyard that gives the estate story a fixed point rather than a general family claim. Unger’s work since 1999 has carried that inheritance into a more defined Kremstal voice: site, variety, and vintage kept legible, with the maker’s decisions visible in restraint rather than ornament. She is also a member of Traditionsweingüter Österreich and of 11 Women and Their Wines, affiliations that place her within Austrian wine circles concerned with continuity, visibility, and the standing of growers who keep their names close to the bottle.

Loess, gravel, and hand-harvested fruit

The estate works from 11 hectares of vineyards on the high plateau at the foot of Göttweiger Berg, south of the Danube. Loess and gravel carry much of the conversation here. Unger farms organically and puts hand-harvested grapes at the center of the method, then keeps the cellar language spare enough for Kremstal DAC clarity to remain in the glass.

Grüner Veltliner leads the range, joined by Gelber Muskateller, Zweigelt, and Pinot Noir. The named wines make the structure plain: 2025 “Q” Grüner Veltliner, GELBER MUSKATELLER FURTH 2025, Grüner Veltliner KREMSTAL DAC FURTH 2025, and Grüner Veltliner KREMSTAL DAC RIED OBERFELD 2024. Those labels do not hide behind fantasy names. They point to variety, village, appellation, vineyard, and vintage, the practical grammar of a cellar that wants its distinctions read closely. Minimal intervention is the stated discipline, but the more persuasive detail is the combination of organic work, hand selection, and a portfolio built around place names rather than cellar theater.

The cellar under Göttweiger Berg

The setting is quiet, with the estate framed by plateau vineyards and the slope of Göttweiger Berg rather than by a large visitor apparatus. The atmosphere is rustic and elegant in the literal sense: a family-run winery where the room does not need to compete with the vineyard. The tasting experience is an estate tasting, intimate in scale, and the pace suits wines that depend on freshness and fine distinctions between loess, gravel, village, and ried.

In that room, the work reads as continuity rather than performance. A glass of that 2024 wine carries the site name forward from the bench to the table, and Unger’s steady tenure gives the label its frame.
