Parcel comes before polish in Roland Velich’s cellar work. Roland Velich, winemaker at Weingut Moric in Großhöflein, has made that order the discipline of the estate since 2001. He is owner, estate manager, and winemaker here, a combination that keeps the decisions near the vines and near the cask. The family inheritance behind him is not treated as romance. It is working material, carried forward through repetition, comparison, and restraint.

Blaufränkisch sits at the center of the bench. Velich’s own wording is direct: “I am looking for "goût de terroir": a combination of the taste of the grape and the soil type.” That is the governing pressure at Moric, where the grape is asked to carry origin rather than decoration. He has said, “I want to taste the different parcels where the vines are planted in my wines.” The line matters because it refuses a single house signature in favor of legibility. The maker reads fruit, parcel, and place, then leaves enough space for each site to hold its register.

Old-vine Blaufränkisch as the method

The program at Moric is built around terroir-expressive Blaufränkisch from old vines rooted in Burgenland’s volcanic and limestone soils. The setting reaches into Leithaberg and the Leitha Mountains, where soil difference is not a caption but the material the cellar must preserve. The work favors clarity: site first, texture second, ornament last. Grüner Veltliner is part of the estate’s range, yet Blaufränkisch remains the measure by which Velich’s thinking is most plainly read.

The wines named around the estate make that method visible without changing the brief. Moric Blaufränkisch Reserve, Blaufränkisch Neckenmarkter Alte Reben, Lutzmannsburg Alte Reben, Ried Meissner, and Blaufränkisch Jagini each stand inside the same field of practice. One does not need the cellar to erase the distance between parcels. The point is the opposite: to let the grain of soil, the ripeness of fruit, and the restraint of the hand remain separate enough to be understood in the glass.

A quiet cellar for mineral lines

The room around the work is quiet, intimate, and held in a refined register. Nothing in the atmosphere asks to outrun the wine. The cellar and tasting room belong to a vineyard estate, scenic without being ornamental, rustic without softening the discipline of the bottles. In a place like this, quiet is not a mood applied after the fact. It gives the wine room to show its seams.

The estate’s natural, small-scale philosophy fits that restraint. Velich’s practice is not framed by volume here, but by the patience required to compare one season against another and one parcel against its neighbor. That kind of time on the tools has made Moric a reference point for Blaufränkisch in Burgenland, with Falstaff naming Velich Winemaker of the Year in 2023.
