Jan Eymael checks the timing before the fruit moves. As owner and winemaker at Weingut Pfeffingen in Bad Dürkheim, Jan Eymael holds the cellar, the vineyards, and the family line in one set of hands. He took over management of the traditional family winery from 2002, after an education under Hans-Günter Schwarz, and his work has stayed inside this estate rather than moving through a sequence of houses. That matters here because Pfeffingen is not built around a borrowed style. It is read through continuity, through Scheurebe, and through the daily pressure of timing.

Eymael has spoken plainly about harvest logistics: "We would have started picking in August, but most of our team was still on vacation." The sentence has the scale of estate work inside it. Weather does not wait for staffing. Fruit does not pause for convenience. At Pfeffingen, the role of owner and winemaker means that those decisions remain close to the vineyard and close to the family table, with production, picking, and cellar judgment kept in the same frame.

Seventeen hectares on chalk and terra rossa

The estate works 17 hectares in the Pfalz, with production given as 10,000 cases annually. Its vineyards sit in the Ungstein sites of Herrenberg, Nussriegel, and Weilberg, where chalky soils and rare terra rossa parcels give Pfeffingen a particular material vocabulary. Riesling is part of the estate language, as are Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Silvaner, Roter Riesling, Merlot, and St. Laurent. Scheurebe remains the marker.

Eymael’s signature bottlings include 2020 Dry Scheurebe and PFEFFINGEN 2018 SCHEUREBE DRY, both direct routes into the house style. The estate also works across still white, still red, dessert, and sparkling wines, but the discipline around Scheurebe gives the place its clearest line. Sustainable practice is the stated philosophy, and the farming has to answer to vineyard sites that are close enough to carry a family name, yet different enough to need separate attention. The method begins before the cellar. It begins with which parcel is ready, which team is available, and what the fruit will allow.

A mansion granted in 1622

The house carries a long memory. Pfeffingen’s historic mansion was granted by Emperor Ferdinand II in 1622, and the estate’s family winemaking legacy reaches back 400 years. That history does not need to be made theatrical; it sits in the setting, among vineyards on the Palatinate Wine Route, where the tasting room and cellar draw their character from the land around them. The mood is conversational rather than hushed. The room has traditional German charm, with the scenic ease of a working estate rather than the polish of a staged room.

For a visitor who arrives through the wines, the sequence is legible: estate tasting, vineyard tour, cellar tour, then the glass. The point is not breadth for its own sake. It is how the same hand moves from Herrenberg, Nussriegel, and Weilberg into a dry Scheurebe with Pfeffingen on the label.
