Adam Louder

The Climb

Bayindeen, Victoria, Australia first came into Adam Louder’s career in 1998 as a cellar hand at Mount Langi Ghiran, a starting point at the production end rather than the front of house. From there, the work widened. In 2001 he joined Chimney Rock in Napa Valley, United States as part of the winemaking team, before moving in 2005 to Château Carsin in Bordeaux, France as winemaker. That was followed by a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and barrel-fermented whites at Margaret River in Margaret River from 2006–2009, adding range to a career built on different regions and different expressions of structure. Cabernet blends came next at Araujo Estate in Napa Valley, United States, where Adam Louder was a team member from 2011. The move kept him inside blending and form, where detail matters as much as scale. He then returned to Mount Langi Ghiran in Grampians wine region, Victoria as winemaker from 2016–2018, bringing the work back to the region where it started. Alongside that, he has been co-founder of SubRosa since 2015 and Chief Winemaker of Mount Langi Ghiran since 2018, pairing ownership with responsibility for a house closely linked to his own history.

Today

Since 2018, Louder has led Mount Langi Ghiran as Chief Winemaker in Bayindeen, Victoria, Australia. The role reads as a continuation rather than a reset: a return to ground he already knows from the cellar up. He has described that familiarity plainly: “I know the property very well. I guess I have a bit of a spiritual connection to the place.” That familiarity shapes the work. Cool-climate Shiraz and Riesling sit at the centre, but so does perspective: the point of view of a winemaker who has worked in western Victoria, Napa Valley, Bordeaux and Margaret River, and still keeps the Grampians as the reference point.

Signature

Adam's signature wines include Langi Shiraz, Cliff Edge Shiraz, Talus Shiraz, and Billi Billi Shiraz. Taken together, they sit within the same working language: site-led wines that rely on restraint, continuity and an understanding of how the property speaks across bottlings.

Recognition

The clearest distinction in the record is the appointment to Chief Winemaker at Mount Langi Ghiran. It carries weight because the path to it runs through the same property: cellar work, later winemaking, and a return after years of work elsewhere. The geography matters, but the return matters more. “The Grampians is where I want to make wine,” Louder has said, and the role places that position at the centre of his career.
