Dan Buckle’s work is rooted in the vineyard first: soil under the fingernails, and the repeated demands of viticulture before anything reaches bottle. In 1986, at sixteen, he helped plant the first vines, and that early hands-on start set the terms for what followed. The line running through his career is practical contact with fruit and land, then the cellar work that turns that material into wine, with sparkling wine, Shiraz, and fermentation recurring as the core language of the job.

Early in his career, Dan Buckle worked as winemaker at Yering Station, winemaker at Mount Langi Ghiran in Victoria, Australia, winemaking and viticulture director at Chandon in Yarra Valley, and winemaker at Carsin in Bordeaux region, France (2007). Those roles mark a progression through vineyard, cellar, and regional style: the disciplined day-to-day of making wine, and the more exacting question of how place and variety hold together. Each post added to the same working discipline, with detail kept close to the fruit and the vineyard left visible in the finished wine. Today, Dan is Chief Winemaker of Domaine Chandon Australia and winemaker of Circe.

Dan Buckle returns often to what happens after release: wine waiting, then reappearing years later in someone else’s hands and still being legible. “A friend of mine texted me recently – his son had just turned twenty, and they had opened a wine I had made in 2004 and they loved it. Winemakers live to get texts like that.” The point is not nostalgia; it is the practical proof that a wine can carry beyond its making and still land cleanly at the table. Pairing, in his view, works best when it stays direct. Dan Buckle does not force a single answer, but he does name a combination that makes the terms clear. “It’s hard to pin one pairing down as a favourite. That said, there’s something about vintage sparkling with scallops and salmon roe. Simple ingredients reflecting their origins.” The emphasis is on clarity, texture, and correspondence: ingredients, origin, and style meeting without excess.
Signature
Dan's signature wines include Chandon Terroir 2018 and 2005 Langi Shiraz. They show two ends of the same working range: sparkling with lift and detail, Shiraz with depth and structure, both carrying the results of long attention to vineyard character and balance.
