Alison Napjus

The Climb

At Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration, Alison Napjus entered hospitality through a program built around service discipline, palate calibration, and operational control. The room-management side of the trade came first at Tribeca Grill in New York, where Napjus worked as manager until 2000 and learned the pace, coordination, and consistency required to run a dining room. Wine media followed in New York at Wine Spectator, where Napjus joined as assistant tasting coordinator from 2000–2012 and spent more than a decade inside the mechanics of organized tasting. That post led to Senior Editor in 2012, held through 2016, and then to a larger tasting mandate. Since 2016, Napjus has served as Tasting Director and lead taster for wines of Spain, France’s Champagne region, South Africa, and regions throughout Italy of Wine Spectator, with responsibility focused on some of the publication’s most closely watched categories.

Today

That scale requires process control as much as sensory judgment: the tasting program has to move with consistency, and Napjus helps keep it calibrated across a large field of bottles. Working with tasters and tasting coordinators in the New York and Napa offices, she helps maintain the rhythm of the reviews while preserving editorial standards. The role asks for both breadth and specificity, since the assignment spans regions and vintages while still depending on bottle-by-bottle assessment. Napjus’s work helps determine how the magazine frames the wines it covers.
