Coming Up
Since 2008, Andrew Rall has held the founder-and-distiller role at Distillery 031. That position is the basis of the work: building spirit through repetition, controlling temperature, texture, and balance, and keeping the distillery tied to one place over time. In trade terms, Rall’s name is attached to a house practice rather than a single release. “we had to educate people and we figured the best way to do that is for people to come and see how we produce it and be able to talk to them.” Andrew has said.
Where They Are Now
The present work sits in distillation and in the identity of the distillery Rall founded. The bottles are where the practice becomes legible: proof, presentation, and recipe all have to hold together in glass, one release at a time. 24K gin is built around real gold flakes and an Italian crystal decanter. Those two details define the bottle’s register: the spirit is not only made to be poured, but also to be presented as an object with visible finish and a deliberate vessel. The range also includes 031 Spiced Rum and Agua Zulu Cachaça. Alongside 24K gin, they show the span of Rall’s output while staying anchored in Durban and in the same distilling base. The labels move between spirit categories, but the throughline remains a single maker and a single site. What that adds up to is continuity rather than scatter. The work is built from the same foundation, the same city, and the same founder’s role, with each bottle offering a different expression of the house. In that sense, the distilling is ongoing refinement: each release tests a different angle on the same framework.
