The Work Today

Champagne’s parcel structure shapes the craft here. Antoine Malassagne points to the scale of the region plainly: “Each plot in Champagne is very small. The average is less than 0.4ha (less than 1 acre), so it’s very small. We have 15 hectares but many, many plots…I don’t have 2 or 3 hectares in the same place.” That reality defines the work: many small decisions, each tied to a specific piece of land. With 15 hectares spread across many plots, the work depends on reading difference rather than flattening it. For Antoine Malassagne, the operational side of the house and the winemaking side meet in that fragmented map, where attention to each parcel has to hold the final wines together as something coherent.
