The Climb

A BSc degree in oenology and viticulture (1997) gave Abrie Beeslaar the technical base for a career built on precision and patience. The qualification marks the start of a practice that favors exacting cellar work over showmanship, with the kind of training that supports long-term consistency rather than short-lived effect. He then worked as winemaker at Kanonkop in Stellenbosch, South Africa (2002–2003), entering an estate with a high reputation and a clear house style to maintain. From that point on, his work and the identity of Kanonkop became closely linked. Abrie Beeslaar was the former cellarmaster / chief winemaker of Kanonkop Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa (2003–August 2024), where the house style has remained in his care. The terms attached to his work are plain: consistency, rigor, and attention to what vineyard and cellar can disclose together. His career has been built by accumulation rather than gesture, with each vintage adding to a reputation formed steadily over time.

Today

He oversaw the estate’s wine direction from the Stellenbosch cellar until August 2024. He has put the ethic plainly: “Just work harder than the rest.” The line fits a working method grounded in discipline and persistence. On vintage assessment, he has said, “The 2022 vintage is showing a lot of potential to become one of the greats.” It is the kind of remark that comes from long exposure to harvests and a clear sense of when a season is building toward something more.

Signature

Abrie's signature wines include Kanonkop Pinotage, Paul Sauer, Kadette, and Cabernet Sauvignon bottling. Together they show the range of Beeslaar’s winemaking: estate-led, structurally consistent, and able to move between benchmark cuvées, blends, and varietal bottlings without losing line.
