Restaurant operation is built in the handoff between room, capital, lease, and service. Ashwin Deshmukh’s early roles put him across those pressure points: partner at Short Stories, managing partner, and investor and partner at Superiority Burger in East Village, Manhattan, New York City (until 2024). Today, the operating brief is tied to ownership as owner / partner of Jean’s.

Today

Current work at Jean’s sits beside the earlier named roles rather than replacing them. The through-line is restaurant stewardship across partner, managing partner, investor, operator, and owner / partner responsibilities.

In Their Words “We had some cash, we had this kitchen, and it felt like no one was really providing services, so we thought, “Why not just give away as much curry as possible?”

Recognition

The recognition rests on the shape of the response: feeding unemployed workers, not staging a campaign around charity. It is also attached to the range of duties held across named venues. Partner, investor, and owner each describe a different layer of restaurant work: shared responsibility, financial exposure, and daily accountability.
