The Training The training is readable in the method: co-founding Allies Wines in 2003 gave Barnaby Flanders a fixed point of entry into the work, not as a loose start but as a defined act of making.

The Lineage Lineage in this work is built through movement between houses, labels, and places rather than through a single straight line. Allies Wines and Garagiste sit as the clearest markers of that path, with small production functioning as a working principle rather than a slogan. In Barnaby Flanders’ case, the scale stays close to the bottle: care, precision, and identity are held together by limited output and a clear sense of purpose. The geography is part of the craft. Mornington Peninsula sits at the centre of the current work, giving the wines a place-based continuity that carries through valley, coast, vineyard, and cellar. The result is a lineage defined less by ceremony than by repetition, adjustment, and the steady transfer of knowledge from one bottling to the next.

The Table The wines make the practice legible. In 2019, Merricks Chardonnay, Merricks Pinot Noir, and Tuerong Chardonnay each anchor the work to a named vintage and a specific bottle, leaving no room for abstraction. They show a producer working at a scale where the detail of place and fruit remains visible in the finished wine. Terre Maritime Chardonnay, 2024 extends that same line forward. Set against the 2019 bottlings, it shows continuity rather than departure: the same focus on high quality wine, the same small-production frame, and the same discipline in naming the work plainly. Taken together, these wines form the record. Merricks Chardonnay, Merricks Pinot Noir, Tuerong Chardonnay, and Terre Maritime Chardonnay are the evidence that the formation has become practice, and that the practice is best understood through the bottles themselves.
