Bernardino Sani

The Path

Technical discipline enters early through study. Bernardino Sani trained at INSAM ENRA Montpellier University (2002), and that education set the framework for the way he would later work: methodical, exacting, and attentive to process. From 2003 at Col D'Orcia in Montalcino, the day-to-day demands of a Tuscan estate added another layer, grounding the technical side of the job in the realities of place. He then returned to Argiano in Italy as Commercial Director (2012–2015), a role that required him to work across both market expectations and the standards of fine wine. Study, cellar work, and commercial direction each added to Sani’s understanding of how an estate functions. Since 2015, he has been CEO and winemaker of Argiano, a dual role that keeps strategy and craft in the same hand.

The Work Today

Since 2015, Sani has served as CEO and winemaker at Argiano in Montalcino, Italy, where the estate’s direction is tied directly to what happens in the wine. The role asks for constant adjustment: enough intervention to guide the result, but not so much that the vineyard’s character gets edited out. In that sense, the work is as much about judgment as it is about technique. Brunello di Montalcino is his specialty. Within that category, balance is not an abstract goal but a working standard, and elegance comes through restraint rather than force. Terroir is treated as a practical reality, not a marketing phrase. Sani’s less invasive approach keeps the wines articulate and composed, with the place still visible in the finished bottle.
