From a farm in rural Waikato to cellars across New Zealand, Australia, California, Oregon and Burgundy, Blair Walter’s path has moved through study, harvests and a decisive turn in Central Otago. A New Zealander trained at Lincoln University and Oregon State University, he is now co-owner of Felton Road Wines in Bannockburn, New Zealand, the winery he joined in late 1996 ahead of its first official 1997 vintage.
Beginnings
The beginning is rural Waikato, where Walter grew up on a farm before wine became the frame for his working life. That origin matters in the plainest possible way: the story starts with land before it moves into cellars, classrooms and vineyards. Formal study took him through Lincoln University and Oregon State University. Those two institutions sit on either side of a career that would become distinctly international, with winemaking experience in New Zealand, Australia, California, Oregon and Burgundy. His view of wine has also had to account for scale beyond the domestic market. Speaking about the choice to plant international varieties, Walter put it directly: "The main reason for planting international varieties is that New Zealand has a small population, so a large part of the winery’s sales depends on exports, and we need the wines to be accepted by consumers all over the world."
The Rise
The pivotal move came in late 1996, when Walter joined Felton Road in Central Otago before its first official 1997 vintage. It was a moment before the release history began, and it placed him at the start of the Bannockburn winery’s public arc rather than after the reputation had already formed. The varieties most closely attached to his work are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. In that trio, the craft is specific rather than vague: red wine, white wine and aromatic white wine, each named as part of the range of his winemaking focus. Over time, the winery’s credentials came to include Demeter biodynamic certification, BioGro organic certification and B-Corp certification. Those three marks give the operation a formal language around farming, organic practice and business standards without needing ornament. Recognition has followed in recent years. The Real Review named the winery New Zealand Best Winery in 2024 and again in 2025, and in 2025 also named Felton Road Wines in Central Otago its Winery of the Year.
Today
Today, Walter’s title is co-owner of the Bannockburn, New Zealand winery where his Central Otago chapter began before the 1997 vintage. The span from rural Waikato to overseas winemaking experience and back into New Zealand gives his career its movement: study, travel, return, and long attachment to one named place. That continuity is the point. The work now gathers together the locations he has learned from, the varieties he is associated with, and the certifications and awards attached to the winery under its own name.
