Beginnings

The inherited frame here is Piedmont, and Bruno Ciocca turns that local memory into a working standard at Cascina Giovinale in Nizza Monferrato, Italy. The emphasis is on place before profile: family attachment to the hills, vineyards, and territory sets the terms for the wines that follow. Ciocca names that inheritance plainly: "I was born in Nizza Monferrato and inherited from my family a love for the territory and for the charm of the vineyards on our hills." In that register, Barbera is one of the clearest expressions of the place he works from.

The Rise

Ownership of Cascina Giovinale is treated less as a title than as a duty, and Bruno Ciocca describes it that way himself. The acquisition marked a point where stewardship became part of the work. "The moment I acquired Cascina Giovinale, I immediately felt this sense of responsibility." That responsibility is translated into cellar discipline: native yeasts, balance, harmony, and terroir are the governing terms, with the aim of wines that stay refined, appealing, supple, and complex. The method is intentionally spare, so the site remains legible in the finished wine. Ciocca states the cellar line with the same restraint: "My approach in the cellar is minimalist, devoted to the search for balance, where aging in wood must give a harmonious result, never invasive or dominant." The wood is meant to support the wine, not override it.
