Carlos Mendez Blas is a mezcal producer in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, where he works in a family palenque tradition with his mother, Margarita Blas, under Cruz de Fuego and related labels. He is a fourth-generation mezcalero and the maestro mezcalero / maker behind traditional, artisanal mezcal expressions such as Espadín, Madrecuishe, and café de olla.
