i. Biography
Today
At Bouchaine Vineyards in Napa, the work sits at the point where vineyard decisions and cellar decisions meet. Chris Kajani serves as President and Winemaker there, and the role reads as an extension of Napa itself: a native of the region, she describes early contact with vineyard life, horse rides through neighbors’ blocks, and wine as part of the household landscape. After training at University of California, Davis, she moved into winemaking at Pahlmeyer in Bay Area from 2004, then continued at Saintsbury in Carneros until 2015. Since 2015, Chris has been winemaker and General Manager of Bouchaine Vineyards, where stewardship, site, and production are worked as one job rather than separate lanes.
Signature
The range of Chris’s signature wines points to a cellar built around precision and variation rather than a single register. Bouchaine Estate Chardonnay 2020, Bouchaine Estate Calera Clone Pinot Noir, Bouchaine Estate Riesling, Bouchaine Estate Mt. Eden Clone Pinot Noir, and Bouchaine Estate Syrah show a winemaker working across styles and textures while keeping the estate’s line clear. The set suggests attention to what each bottling can carry on its own, and to how those bottles still speak in the same house voice.
In Their Words "We live and breathe grapes and wine—but we also live on this dirt, breathe this air and drink this water. We are dedicated to leaving a gentle imprint, so that this land can be enjoyed for generations." "Pick for flavor. Get serious about the details. Don’t take shortcuts. And above all, enjoy the wine." Taken together, those lines place the work in plain terms: land first, then method, then the finished wine. Chris Kajani’s own language keeps the priorities direct. It asks for close attention in the vineyard and cellar, for restraint in handling, and for a standard of work that does not separate technical rigor from the simple matter of whether the wine is worth drinking.
Recognition
The recognition here sits less in a single trophy than in a way of reading the wines themselves. The stated emphasis on experimentation, detail, flexibility, and adaptation shows up as a working approach: the vineyard is allowed to lead, but only within a framework of discipline. In Chris Kajani’s case, that balance defines the house style at Bouchaine Vineyards as much as any one bottling does.
