Career Arc
Luxury retail in Singapore in the early 1970s required an operator who could read brand position, customer behavior, and the mechanics of import-led fashion. In 1972, Christina Ong founded Club 21, building a platform for luxury fashion and lifestyle retail with discipline around selection, presentation, and market fit. Hospitality added another operating register: property, service, and lifestyle had to work as one system rather than separate departments. Through the establishment of the COMO Group and ownership of COMO Hotels and Resorts, Christina Ong built across luxury hotels and lifestyle, with attention placed on comfort, atmosphere, and the consistency of the guest experience. Brand ownership in fashion demands a different kind of stewardship from retail distribution: the asset carries its own design language, customer memory, and market expectations. The 2003 acquisition of Mulberry by Christina Ong extended her work in luxury beyond store networks and hospitality into ownership of a named fashion house. “My husband’s work is the bigger picture. I notice details.” Christina has said.
The Current Work
Luxury operations at this level depend on continuity across retail, hotels, and brand ownership. Christina Ong remains associated with COMO Hotels and Resorts as founder and owner, with the COMO Group and Club 21 continuing as central parts of that wider luxury and lifestyle structure. The working method described around her businesses is detail-led and iterative: ideas are developed, refined, and carried through execution. In markets where taste, service, and property standards move quickly, Christina Ong’s approach has been defined by close attention to the particulars that shape customer experience.
