The Idea

Born in Wimbledon, London, England, and British, Coates approached wine as something to be read closely, not reduced to easy shorthand. His specialty is Burgundy, and the fit is clear: a region built on subtle differences suits a writer drawn to restraint, texture, and depth. “There’s that earthiness and that subtlety that’s really has about a lot to do with harmony and beauty.” He has also worked as a critic, which suits a style of thought that stays spare and direct. The Execution

Before founding and editing The Vine in 1975, he was a wine buyer at The Wine Society in Stevenage, England. That sequence matters.
