Coming Up
Brown University gave Dana Cowin the academic framework that later showed up in her editorial work: range, discipline, and a habit of connecting one field to another. She came out of a non-food-oriented family, but the point of entry was never family tradition. It was editorial instinct. That instinct carried her through Vogue, House & Garden, and Mademoiselle, where food sat beside fashion, shelter, and culture rather than apart from them. At Vogue, Dana Cowin worked as associate editor. At House & Garden and Mademoiselle, she served as managing editor. Each role sharpened the same skill set: pace, structure, and the ability to treat taste as a reporting category, not a decorative one. Those magazine years established the method that would define her later work — food as a subject with cultural weight, and culture as something best understood through the specifics of publication, editing, and audience. Food & Wine became the central platform for that approach. In 1994, Dana Cowin became executive editor there, then moved up to editor-in-chief in 1995, a position she held until 2016. The significance of that run lies in the tenure itself: more than two decades spent shaping how food could be written, framed, and discussed for a broad readership. Later, as scout at Chefs Club, she stayed close to the people and ideas moving through the dining world. Since 2024, Dana Cowin has been founder of Progressive Hedonist. The name points to a working idea rather than a slogan: pleasure with structure, enjoyment with intent, and editorial judgment applied to contemporary food conversation.
Where They Are Now
Progressive Hedonist carries Dana Cowin’s food-and-culture remit into a format that is less dependent on a single masthead. Through Speaking Broadly, an event series, zine, and podcast, the work focuses on women at the intersection of creativity, sustainability, and food. The structure matters here. It extends the kind of curation she practiced in magazines, but with room for conversation, live exchange, and multiple forms of publication. What continues across the shift is the method. Dana Cowin has built her career around the point where ideas become legible to a public: where taste is edited, where context changes the meaning of a story, and where food can be treated as part of culture rather than a separate category. Progressive Hedonist keeps that editorial discipline in play while widening the formats available to it.
