Career Domingo Ghirardelli was born in Rapallo, Italy, and later worked in San Francisco, California as a general store proprietor before founding Ghirardelli Chocolate there. The trade line runs through Genoa first: training there, then a start as a confectioner apprentice in the confectionery trade in Genoa, Italy, followed by work as a coffee and chocolate merchant in Peru.
