Ed Donovan

The Path

Training at Stanford University and The University of Texas at Austin gave Ed Donovan the academic base that later fed into wine. In 1994, he worked at Martin Wine Cellar in New Orleans, where early professional practice began to meet the realities of the trade. The throughline is practical rather than romantic: context matters, distinctions matter, and finished wine has to belong at the table. Since 2016, Donovan has been owner of Boonville Road Wines, bringing that long-running sensibility into a Mendocino County winery.

As owner and winemaker at Boonville Road Wines in Mendocino County, California, United States, Donovan works from a clear position. “I’m motivated by what I see as a disconnect between the fruit that we grow in Mendocino and the wines that get made from it.” That is the central problem he names, and it shapes how he approaches style, texture, and balance. He is equally direct about the style he resists: “Everything is ripened to the hilt, everything is dumped into the crusher.
