The Climb

Training at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Economics gave Edvard Svetlik a base in economics before his work moved into board-level stewardship. From there, the route ran through roles where scale and judgment were part of the craft: member of the management board at Eta Cerkno, then Managing Director at Iskra Idrija from 1980. The throughline is control of process, attention to consequence, and the ability to hold both immediate execution and longer-term structure. That same discipline later reappeared in wine through Svetlik Wine Estate, where Edvard Svetlik is founder and co-owner, alongside his work as chairman of Svetlik Family Office and chairman of Svetlik Charitable Foundation. The titles map a single operating style across family, capital, and land. Industry set the early rhythm; wine became the later form, but the method stayed rooted in precision, patience, and a clear sense of purpose.

Today

At the center of the estate’s work sits Amber Rebula wine, with Edvard Svetlik as chairman of the Svetlik Family Office. The project is framed by a practical line he has used to describe it: “We decided to build a house and plant vines somewhere with more sky and more sun.” The choice is not ornamental; it points to an approach that treats site, openness, and light as part of the making. Scale is handled with the same restraint. “We aim to produce a small yield, but of exceptional quality,” he has said, setting output against standards rather than volume. That position suits a winery built on exacting work and patience. On the local grape, he added, “This local variety is our favourite.” The statement is plain, but it places value on the material itself and on what can be drawn from place when the work is kept close to it.

Signature

Edvard’s signature dishes include Amber Rebula Selekcija, 2015, Rebula selekcija, and 2017. Each one sits within the same tonal world as the estate’s broader work: measured, precise, and shaped by a commitment to quality over quantity. Together, they read less like isolated labels than as markers of an evolving identity, with Amber Rebula as the clearest thread linking the project’s present to its sense of purpose.

Recognition

Amber Rebula remains the clearest marker of his wine work and the small-yield approach.
