i. Biography
British Master of Wine Edward Ragg moved from Cambridge’s blind-tasting circles to Beijing in early 2007, bringing literary scholarship into the same frame as serious wine work. In Beijing, he and Fongyee Walker established Dragon Phoenix Wine Consulting, a name now closely tied to wine education and independent guidance in mainland China. The shape of his career is unusual but clear enough: academic training, consulting practice, and cultural translation converged in one city, and that became the base from which he worked.
The Climb
Edward Ragg’s career took shape in Beijing, China, where he served as associate professor at Tsinghua University, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures from 2007–2017. Those years gave the work its academic grounding and show the range of his practice: literature was the discipline, but the real output was sustained intellectual labor in a city that became central to his professional life. Alongside that post, he co-founded Dragon Phoenix Wine Consulting in 2007, giving his wine knowledge a public, practical outlet. Since 2017, he has continued as a co-founder and as an Independent Scholar of No Institution, while also serving as an Editorial Board Member of The Wallace Stevens Journal.
Today
Today, as a Master of Wine, he remains co-founder of Dragon Phoenix Wine Consulting in Beijing. The firm’s Fine Wine Consulting work is described as Beijing’s first independent wine consultancy, built to spread wine education in mainland China. That focus keeps the work practical: not just advice, but field-building, making wine less obscure and knowledge more available. For Ragg, literary study and wine practice continue to run side by side, one anchored in scholarship, the other in education. Both depend on patience, precision, and the ability to register nuance.
Signature
Edward's signature dishes include A Force That Takes, Holding Unfailing, Vital Signs, and Material Witness. The titles themselves carry a poetic charge, and they point to the same measured layering and interpretive eye that shape his wider work.
In Their Words “I used to run the Cambridge University Blind Wine Tasting Society (CUBWTS) with my wife, Fongyee, and we were both Captains of the Cambridge team as well as writing a guide to blind tasting for CUBWTS, which I still revise each year.” “My research work has been primarily in Modernist and Post-Modernist literature, especially on Wallace Stevens.”
Recognition
Edward's honors include Cinnamon Press Poetry Award (2012).
