Eric Wolfinger

Cook, photographer, and director Eric Wolfinger came to food photography through kitchen work, travel photography, and a training ground built outside the classroom. After college, he wanted to write about food, but first saw the gap in his own practice: to write with authority, he needed to cook better. The camera came later; the appetite for the work was already in place. The route to the lens ran through restaurant service and bakery discipline. Wolfinger spent a year working in restaurants, then moved to Tartine Bakery in San Francisco, where he apprenticed himself to the owner. That period was a turning point in his career, less a stopover than a working education in what food labor could become. As he has said, “This was too good of an opportunity to pass up. It showed me that, hey, there is a career possibility that I could make a living taking pictures of food.” By 2008, the identity had shifted from travel photographer to food photographer. Wolfinger had already spent years making travel images, learning how to observe and translate a scene, but that year marked the point at which he began to name the work differently.
