i. Biography
Ernest Gallo co-founded E & J Gallo Winery in Modesto, California in 1933, and built his work around wine marketing and sales. The pivot was practical: grapes had to become wine if the property was going to be saved. As he put it, “We thought that by going into the wine business - taking the crop and converting it into wine - we could probably get enough to save the property, and that’s what we did.”
The Climb
The family vineyards set the terms of the business: debt on the property pushed the Gallo family toward wine rather than liquidation. Ernest Gallo’s role in 1933 was not only to co-found E & J Gallo Winery in Modesto, California, but to place marketing and sales at the center of the enterprise from the outset.
