The present work at the estate in Cornas is defined by observation and restraint. Franck Balthazar describes vintages by what the season imposes, not by what a cellar might wish to claim. When he says, “2013 was a late harvest, into October,” the line does its own work: it places harvest in the calendar without decoration and leaves the reader with the fact that timing in Cornas can be pushed deep into autumn. Crop load and fruit set are treated with the same plainspoken precision. Franck Balthazar has said, “April through June 15 was very cold and the old vines had a lot of coulure — my yields are about [1.2 tons per acre], down from a normal of [2.2 to 2.6 tons].” The language is exact because the work is exact.
