The Climb
Whisky production is learned first from the floor, and Frank McHardy’s earliest years in the trade reflect that basic fact. In 1963, he began as a floor sweeper at Invergordon distillery, taking in the daily workings of the place from the ground level. By 1966, he had moved to Tamnavulin (Tomnavoulin) distillery as a shift worker, a role that required stamina, attention, and patience while the work of distilling ran on around him. Those years set the pattern for his career: practical apprenticeship, close observation, and a working knowledge of whisky made by doing the job, not standing apart from it. That path led to his role as director of production of J.A. Mitchell & Co. Ltd since 2008, a position that reflects long service and confidence earned across decades in the trade.
Today
At Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown, Scotland, production manager has meant more than oversight since 2011; it is the point where long experience meets a house known for process and character carrying equal weight. Frank McHardy’s time in the industry gives that role its authority, because the distillery floor is not abstract to him. The work there rests on familiarity with the making itself, and on a view of production shaped by years spent inside whisky rather than beside it.
Signature
Frank’s signature dishes include Springbank 15 Years Old, Springbank 10 Years Old, and Gelston's 25-year-old. Together, they show a working range across maturity and style, with each expression pointing back to the same discipline: how whisky develops over time. Their place in his name reflects familiarity with spirit at different stages of its life, and with the balance and texture that maturation brings.
In Their Words “The biggest single contributor to the quality and flavour of Whisky is the cask in which the whisky has been matured.” “Springbank has always been my favourite distillery.” The first remark places maturation at the centre of flavour, and makes the cask the key variable in how whisky takes shape. The second fixes Springbank as a reference point in McHardy’s thinking, a clear preference rather than a flourish. Read together, the two lines show a practical outlook: whisky is made through time, materials, and place.
Recognition
Two remarks frame his outlook on whisky-making: "Springbank has always been my favourite distillery." "The biggest single contributor to the quality and flavour of Whisky is the cask in which the whisky has been matured."
