The Climb
Precision from engineering carries cleanly into vineyard work, and Fred Zmarzly’s route into wine shows that overlap plainly. Santa Clara College, aerospace engineering in Sunnyvale, and later work engineering spy satellites at Lockheed Martin gave him a background built around systems, forces, and long technical intervals. Since 2002, that same discipline has been applied to Albertina Wine Cellars, where he has worked as a grape grower and owner.
Today
Cabernet Sauvignon at Albertina Wine Cellars is handled as a farming problem first: vine behavior, fruit set, and the choices made in the block decide what reaches the bottle. For Fred Zmarzly, the wine’s identity starts in the vineyard, where day-to-day management shapes how the fruit expresses itself. The language is direct because the work is direct. “The vines can’t get deep, so they struggle and more energy goes into the fruit. My vines produce smaller berries with intense flavor.” Sustainability, in this frame, is not a slogan but a measure of continuity. Fred Zmarzly describes farming as stewardship across time, with the health of the vineyard judged against decades rather than seasons. “We are sustainable such that in 50 years from now the vineyard will still be as healthy.” That is the practical register of the work: methodical, restrained, and built for endurance.
Signature
Albertina Cellars Cabernet and Lorilai's Reserve Merlot sit at the center of Fred Zmarzly’s signature wines. Both are grounded in vineyard character, with the fruit’s shape and intensity doing the speaking. The throughline is careful farming and a steady refusal to overstate the result.
In Their Words “The vines can’t get deep, so they struggle and more energy goes into the fruit. My vines produce smaller berries with intense flavor.” “It’s a very special vineyard. Cab is a very vigorous plant. It will grow anywhere, but that doesn’t mean it will make good wine.”
Recognition
Lorilai's Reserve Merlot was tasted with Fred Zmarzly during a visit there, which places the wine not only in production but in direct conversation with the people who encounter it. That detail belongs to the record of the work: the wine as made, tasted, and carried into memory through the vineyard itself.
