Garry Crittenden

The Climb

Garry Crittenden came to wine through horticulture, not through restaurant culture or cellar theatrics. Before Crittenden became identified with the Mornington Peninsula, his working life was built in horticultural research and plant nurseries, where the work depended on observation, patience, and reading how land, soil, and season behave. That background mattered. It gave him a grower’s discipline and a practical eye for place, both of which would later shape how he approached vines. In 1982, Crittenden founded Crittenden Estate on the Mornington Peninsula, and the estate became the central work of his career. The move was a measured one: on his Dromana property, he made a closely judged planting decision that would help define the region’s early viticultural identity. What he established was not just a vineyard, but an early marker for grapegrowing in a place still working out what it could support.

Today

Crittenden remains the founder and guiding force behind Crittenden Estate. The site itself is part of the method here: the choice was made through long assessment rather than fashion, with the Peninsula read for soils, elevation, and aspect before anything went into the ground. As he explains, “I had chosen my site at 150 feet elevation based on a long assessment of Peninsula soils, elevations and aspects.” The line is plain, and so is the approach — select the ground carefully, understand it properly, and let that work set the terms for what follows.

Signature

Big Chair Pinot Noir is one of Garry's signature wines. It sits as a direct expression of the estate, carrying forward the same clarity and restraint that shaped the first plantings on the Dromana property.

In Their Words “In September 1982 I planted five acres of vines on my property at Dromana: four of Cabernet, half an acre of Merlot and a quarter each of Pinot and Chardonnay.” “In so doing I doubled the aggregated plantings of all the vineyard area on the Peninsula at the time from five to 10 acres.”

Recognition

The scale of that 1982 planting is the basis of Garry Crittenden’s recognition. Five acres was a small holding, but at that moment on the Mornington Peninsula it carried outsized weight. As he put it, “In so doing I doubled the aggregated plantings of all the vineyard area on the Peninsula at the time from five to 10 acres.” That early commitment places his work at the start of modern grapegrowing in the region, where site selection and first plantings helped set the terms for what the Peninsula could become.
