The Path
The early formation of Genet Agonafer’s cooking came in Kebena, Ethiopia, where the caretaker who looked after her mother also became an early reference point for food. That kind of domestic apprenticeship stays in the work: it teaches sequence, restraint, and how flavor is carried in memory before it is ever plated. For Agonafer, that childhood education later met a career shaped by Ethiopian cuisine and sharpened through years of service work in Los Angeles. Hospitality work moved through several forms before Meals by Genet took shape. Agonafer worked as a flight attendant at Ethiopian Airlines, then as a bartender, a waitress, and a caterer for film production companies in Los Angeles, California. Those roles demanded pace, coordination, and constant attention to the room. Since 2001, she has brought those habits into Meals by Genet as the founder, chef, and owner, building the restaurant from the ground up and keeping it under her direction ever since.
The Work Today
Meals by Genet is built around Ethiopian cuisine presented in a formal dining-room register. Crisp white tablecloths, soft background music, and wine place the food in a bistro setting rather than a casual one, and that framing is part of the craft. Under Agonafer’s direction, the room is polished but not overworked; the service and atmosphere are measured enough to let the cooking lead.
