i. Biography
Formal wine study can anchor a service career when it is treated as trade training rather than credential collecting. Born in St-Etienne, France, Gerard Basset trained at the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), then went on to earn the titles of Master Sommelier and Master of Wine. The working principle attached to that record was humility before knowledge: useful in the cellar, on the floor, and in any room where wine is being translated for guests. “The English girls were beautiful.” Gerard has said.
The Trajectory
Wine service in Britain changed when hotel hospitality began to treat the list, the glass, and the table as one operating system. In 1988, Gerard Basset trained at the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), building the formal base for a career defined by service, education, and cellar judgment. In 1994, he co-founded Hotel du Vin Group in the UK, where wine was not an accessory to the room but part of the house identity. He remained with Hotel du Vin Group until 2004. Hotel ownership gave the sommelier’s craft a fuller operating frame: buying, cellaring, staff education, guest service, and hospitality standards under one roof. From 2007 to 2018, Gerard Basset was the owner of Hotel TerraVina in the New Forest, Hampshire, UK. The project placed wine knowledge inside daily hotel service, where selection mattered only if it could be delivered clearly and consistently to guests. Institutional work matters in wine because exams, standards, and language shape how the next generation practices. Gerard Basset served as president at the Court of Master Sommeliers (Europe) and held the position of Honorary President at the Wine and Spirit Education Trust from 2014 to 2017. Those roles placed him inside two of the field’s key training and assessment structures, where professional discipline is passed from one cohort to the next.
During His Career Hotel TerraVina marked the later stage of a career built around wine-led hospitality. Until his passing, Gerard Basset was the owner of Hotel TerraVina, keeping the work close to service rather than separating wine expertise from the guest experience. His influence remained tied to practical sommelier values: study, clarity, humility, and the ability to make a cellar useful in a live dining room.
Acclaim
Recognition in the sommelier trade tends to follow breadth: service, tasting, education, leadership, and public contribution. Gerard Basset’s honors included Chevalier of the Mérite Agricole (2018), Decanter's Man of the Year (2013), Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) (2011), and World Sommelier Championship (2010). The range of those awards reflects a career that crossed restaurant floor practice, hotel ownership, formal wine education, and international competition.
