Since 1987, the chef/owner role at Nezinscot Farm has meant more than running a kitchen or managing a business. In Gloria Varney’s case, it has meant holding a place where food, craft, and farm labor stay in conversation rather than separating into neat categories. The fiber work did not end when she took on the chef/owner role; it remained part of the same practice, alongside the cooking and the demands of a working farm. That mix gives her career a wide but coherent range: culinary, artistic, and agricultural at once, with each part informing the others.

The Work Today

At Nezinscot Farm, the craft still runs on that dual register. Gloria Varney describes herself plainly: “I’m first and foremost a farmer.” In trade terms, that places the farm at the center of the work, not at the edge of it. She has also said, “I am an artist in so many different fields and I bring all of those to this farm.” That is the useful frame here: the cooking, the fiber work, and the day-to-day management of Nezinscot Farm all come from the same habit of making with attention.
