Since 1987, the chef/owner role at Nezinscot Farm has meant more than running a kitchen or managing a business. In Gloria Varney’s case, it has meant holding a place where food, craft, and farm labor stay in conversation rather than separating into neat categories. The fiber work did not end when she took on the chef/owner role; it remained part of the same practice, alongside the cooking and the demands of a working farm. At Nezinscot Farm, the craft still runs on that dual register. Gloria Varney describes herself plainly: “I’m first and foremost a farmer.” In trade terms, that places the farm at the center of the work, not at the edge of it.
