i. Biography
Hannes Nel’s work at Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West is built on a line of continuity: microbiology, quality control, cellar management, and chief winemaking all sit on the same foundation of precision. The progression from laboratory bench to cellar leadership is not a break with earlier practice but an extension of it, with the same discipline carrying from analysis into wine style.
The Path
Training at the University of Stellenbosch led Hannes Nel into a long tenure at Lourensford Estate in Somerset West, where each step added another layer to the same craft. From 2002–2008, he worked as microbiologist in charge of quality control, a role defined by scrutiny, consistency, and the routines that keep a cellar exact. From 2008–2013, he moved into winemaking with special focus on white wines, bringing that technical background closer to the finished wine. In 2013, he became Cellar Master at Lourensford Estate in Somerset West, joining those responsibilities into one position. Today, Hannes is chief winemaker of Lourensford Estate since 2020. The role reflects accumulation rather than reinvention: years of observing, tasting, correcting, and refining folded into broader responsibility for the estate’s winemaking identity.
The Work Today
“We believe in minimal interference in winemaking; maintaining the purest form of the grapes.” That principle sets the frame for the work, and it keeps the wines close to the fruit and the vineyard. The stated aim is to make top quality wines from perfectly balanced vineyards, with elegance and complexity carried through as working goals rather than slogans. The route from microbiology to cellar leadership remains visible in the way the work is described. Quality control, laboratory discipline, and cellar oversight are connected parts of the same practice, and at the Somerset West estate that background shapes an approach that is measured, attentive, and grounded in detail.
Signature
Hannes's signature wines include Honey Liqueur, Kleipot Petite Sirah, Kleipot Roussanne, Kleipot Chardonnay, and Winemakers Selection Red Blend. The range points to a style defined by clarity, texture, and the estate’s fruit rather than overt intervention.
In Their Words “I challenged myself to make premium wines without using oak, to produce special wines which express the vastly different terroirs available at our magnificent cool climate wine estate.” “His vision is to make top quality wines from perfectly balanced vineyards, and he strives to create wines that are both elegant and complex.”
