American whiskey production is a continuity trade: grain handling, distillation, maturation, and blending decisions must repeat cleanly over years while leaving room for controlled technical change. At Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, that discipline is evidenced in Harlen Wheatley’s path from study at Northern Kentucky University and the University of Kentucky to a 1995 supervisor role inside the plant. His move to Master Distiller in 2005 kept the work within the operating system of a large Kentucky distillery, not apart from it as a brand exercise. “My goal is to leave the distillery – and the industry – better than I found it, through constant learning, experimentation, and training, both for myself and my team.” Harlen has said.
