i. Biography
Hortensia Hernández Martínez is a master mezcalera from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, where she helps lead a women-owned, women-led family distillery rooted in a five-generation mezcal heritage. She is master distiller/master mezcalera and credits collaborations with her daughters on limited-edition bottlings, while Bowler Wine notes that she and her daughters took over the family business after the death of her husband, master mezcalero Juan Hernández Méndez, in 2020.
