In Their Words “The term ‘pub’ harkens back to ‘public house’ originally, which was a gathering place for the townspeople to get together and have a drink and socialize.” The public house, as Cutler uses the term, is defined by function before style: a room for gathering, drinking, and social exchange. That reading places the pub in its older civic role, less as a concept to brand than as a shared space with a clear social purpose. “They didn’t have the Internets and the TikToks and the Facebooks to communicate with. The public house was a means of in-person communication.” Cutler frames the public house as a practical answer to the need for face-to-face contact.
