i. Biography
James C. Crow was a 19th-century Scottish-born chemist and distiller who worked in Kentucky and is credited with helping standardize the sour mash process for bourbon whiskey. He is associated with Old Crow, one of the earliest nationally recognized bourbon brands, and with the Old Oscar Pepper distillery in Versailles, Kentucky. He died in Versailles, Kentucky, in 1856.
