The Path

Early winemaking work at a state wine company and at Disznókő gave János Árvay two practical foundations in Hungarian wine. Those posts established a working method built on observation, steady hands, and confidence in the vineyard’s own material. Since 1995, his role as winemaker at Árvay Winery has placed that method at the center of the house in Rátka and within Tokaj’s broader identity.

The Work Today

The stated approach to winemaking is direct: "Wine-making is an easy task for us; we allow the character of our vineyards to shine through with the help of nature." That line points to a craft that favors restraint over intervention, with the vineyard treated as the primary source of form. He ties that practice to place in personal terms: "The land of our birth feeds us, body and soul." János's signature wines include Hétfürtös Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos 1999 and Árvay Tokaji Késöi Furmint. Those names sit squarely in Tokaj’s own vocabulary, where timing, vineyard character, and local tradition are part of the wine’s definition. They mark the scope of his work and the style he has returned to over time.
