The Climb
Wine work often gets built in stages, and Etzel’s path shows that plainly: Oregon State University, then a sequence of harvests and cellar rooms that tightened the link between observation and execution. In Spain, he worked as a harvest intern at Clos Erasmus and then as a harvest intern at Viña El Pisón, settings that would have demanded the daily discipline of vineyard and cellar labor. The training there was practical rather than theoretical: work, repetition, attention. California added another layer to that progression. As a wine industry worker at Kapcsàndy and later as a wine industry worker at Fisher, Etzel added more terrain, more fruit, and more working rhythms to a background already marked by movement. The result was a résumé built by accumulation rather than shortcuts, with each stop contributing to the way he reads a vintage and manages a cellar. That progression settled into a defining chapter at Domaine Roy & Fils in Dundee, where he served as co-founder from 2012 to 2023. The work there tied his name to Oregon winemaking in a more permanent way, and Rodeo Hills followed as the next sustained line in that same practice, with Etzel as winemaker since 2016.
Today
In 2025, Etzel is the winemaker of his new label, Rodeo Hills, in Dundee. The role continues the same regional focus, with years in Oregon informing the decisions that shape the wines.
