The Path
At Château Pontet-Canet, the Estate Director — the régisseur — holds the daily mechanics and the long view at once, and Jean-Michel Comme occupied that role until May 2020. In practice, that meant carrying authority across vineyard and cellar while the estate’s working identity was being clarified through repeated decisions, season after season. The position sat at the center of the property’s rhythm, where management and farming were not separate concerns but linked parts of the same system.
The Work Today
Biodynamics, as Jean-Michel Comme described it, was never just a technical option; it had to make sense across the whole estate. “The biodynamic method resonated well with us; it has a global dimension that the organic method just cannot compete with.” That framing places the method in working terms: soil, vine, weather, and stewardship as one field of responsibility, rather than a series of isolated interventions. At Château Pontet-Canet, biodynamics is presented as a way of thinking as much as a way of farming. The conversion itself was not a matter of switching labels or procedures. It required sustained work over time, with no shortcut from intention to outcome. The effort had to begin before any public declaration could be made, which is often how real change in farming takes hold: first in repeated labor, then in recognition. That is the shape of the estate’s transition as Comme describes it — gradual, demanding, and built to endure.
In Their Words “A lot of hard work went into the move to biodynamics, hard work that started well before Pontet-Canet could actually call itself biodynamic.” The point here is timing: the work came before the name, and the practice had to be established before the estate could claim the method. For a viticultural shift of this kind, the visible result is only the last step in a much longer process of preparation, adjustment, and follow-through. “The biodynamic method resonated well with us; it has a global dimension that the organic method just cannot compete with.”
Acclaim
The recognition attached to this work is less about a single announcement than about the credibility that comes from sustained implementation. In the case of Château Pontet-Canet, the biodynamic approach is presented as the outcome of long effort and consistent conviction, with Jean-Michel Comme’s role defined by the work of carrying that shift through to its practical conclusion.
