The Making
Hospitality training often starts before the title does: in education, observation, and the ability to understand institutional codes. Jeff Klein was educated at Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School and graduated from Tulane University in 1993, entering the hotel trade the same year. Front-of-house apprenticeship gives an operator the clearest view of how a property actually functions. In 1993, Klein began as a bellman at The Franklin Hotel in New York City, a position built on guest services, timing, luggage flow, and first-contact judgment. By 1998, the same trade path had moved him into the role of General Manager at The Mansfield Hotel, also in New York City. Ownership and partnership in hospitality shift the craft from service execution to the shaping of rooms, teams, and repeatable standards. Klein became a partner at Monkey Bar in New York City in 2009, holding that position until 2020. As founder of JK Hotel Group, he owns Sunset Tower Hotel, West Hollywood, since 2004, and San Vicente Bungalows, West Hollywood, and No. 850 since 2013.
The Work Today
Luxury hotel operation depends on the join between built environment and service culture.
