The Climb
Formal study at Roseworthy College gave Jeremy Oliver the basics, but the work took shape in the field. In 1983–1983, time at lindeman's and Katnook Estate at Coonawarra, Victoria, placed him in the practical conditions where vineyard, site, and cellar are read together. That early exposure established a career built around interpreting wine as a made thing: shaped by place, then carried from vineyard to glass. Since 1984, Oliver has worked as a Wine Writer through self-published / independent work, maintaining a long and consistent presence in the category. In 1997, he became author of the australian wine annual of self-published, adding a recurring editorial duty that depends on discipline as much as knowledge. Industry-facing roles have been part of the same practice. As ambassadorial representative for australian wine of Australian wine industry, Oliver has carried Australian wine into broader conversations, while membership of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival honorary board of Melbourne Food and Wine Festival keeps him connected to one of the country’s most visible food-and-wine platforms. Across writing, presentation, and advocacy, the throughline is the same: translating wine without losing its commercial, cultural, or technical context.
Today
Working as a Wine Writer since 1984 gives Oliver’s commentary the authority of repetition and long observation. He also works as a presenter and educator, moving between explanation and audience-facing exchange with a style that stays practical. Of the offering he is describing, he says, “These are not discounts - these are wines finding their gravitational place in retail - so our proposition is completely different to that.” The line is typical of his method: precise about value, positioning, and the terms by which wine is understood in trade. That plainness carries through in another remark: “It's that a customer will know how much they want to spend on a bottle.” The point is direct. Wine, in Oliver’s framing, is a purchase shaped by preference, budget, and context rather than abstract aspiration.
