Early service work at Boiler Room restaurant in Omaha, Nebraska gave Jesse Becker exposure to the pace of the floor and the practical role wine plays at the table. Running Périphérique Wine Merchants in San Francisco, California moved him closer to the mechanics of the trade itself, where selection, buying, and conversation all meet. He now writes about german and austrian wines for Wine in Germany & Austria, serves as U.S. Sales manager of Veritable Wines & Estates KG, and is Regional and Category Ambassador of Sommeliers Choice Awards. The throughline is specificity: a career centered on a defined part of the wine world, while still engaging the wider market that receives it.

The Work Today

As Regional and Category Ambassador for Sommeliers Choice Awards, Jesse Becker works in the space between category and placement, where visibility on a list can change how a wine is read. He has said, “it’s important to give German Riesling and Pinot Noir more visibility on wine lists.” That position is less about promotion for its own sake than about making room for wines whose character can be missed when they sit outside the standard frame. The work is about giving German wines a clearer edge in service: present them plainly, and let the wine do the rest.
