Jim Shumate

At Meridian Vineyards, the craft advanced in sequence. Jim Shumate moved from barrel room worker to Senior Lab Technician, then to Senior Barrel Technician, building fluency in the physical and analytical sides of wine production. The progression reads as method rather than happenstance: steady responsibility, close attention, and a growing command of cellar operations. In 1999, the work became more explicitly managerial and consultative at Templeton Wine Services, where Shumate served as Cellar Master and Consulting Winemaker through 2008.

The role kept him close to the day-to-day decisions that shape wine in tank and barrel, while the title of Consulting Winemaker points to a broader remit than cellar labor alone. By 2008, that practical base carried into the Cal Poly pilot winery, where he worked as Cellar Master, winemaker, and lecturer, joining production with instruction in the same setting. Since 2011, Jim has been winemaker of Pomar Junction. The position gathers the earlier parts of the career into one post: vineyard, cellar, and classroom experience applied to an ongoing program rather than a single vintage. It is a role shaped by accumulation, where each prior stop informs the next decision.

At the winery, he has worked as winemaker, with Cab Forward among the wines associated with his name. The Reserve blend is assembled from the best barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot, and the label also carries the railroad heritage of the Merrill family. Shumate describes it as having excellent aging potential, which places the emphasis on structure and time rather than immediacy.

Jim's signature wines include Cab Forward and 2017 Zinfandel. Read together, they show a range that runs from a Reserve blend built on selection and blend composition to a vintage-named Zinfandel that carries its year in the foreground.
