At Morgado do Quintão in Lagoa, Portugal, the work resolves into Morgado do Quintão Branco, a single-vineyard wine from 40-year-old vines of Crato Branco. The point is precision: a clear reading of Algarve terroir, carried without excess and without disguise.
The Climb
Technical training comes first in Joana Maçanita’s career, and the sequence is visible in the roles themselves. She trained at Instituto Superior de Agronomia before joining the oenology team at Vinho Preta in Portugal in 2004, where cellar discipline and production work set the terms of the job. In that setting, the craft is practical before it is expressive: each decision lands in the finished wine. From 2006, the work widened across regions and climates. As a trainee at Haselgrove Winery in McLaren Vale, Australia, she added another production environment to the repertoire, while also joining the oenology teams at Arrepiado Velho in Alentejo, Portugal (from 2006) and Cem Reis in Alentejo, Portugal (from 2006). That combination of placements built range through repetition and comparison, with each site adding a different reference point for vineyard and cellar work. By 2008, that practical background also extended into judging. She became a judge at International Wine Challenge in London, United Kingdom, and at Wine Masters competition in Estoril, Portugal. The role places her on the other side of the bench: evaluating structure, balance, and the standards by which wines are measured beyond their own cellar. In 2009, she brought that sensibility into food and hospitality through an enogastronomy project at Azores Tourism and Hotel School in Azores, Portugal. In 2010, Maçanita took on winemaking for the Mãos project at Mãos e Irmãos in Douro, Portugal. From 2012, the scope expanded again through Project Director roles at Cabrita Wines in Algarve, Portugal, João Clara Vinhos in Algarve, Portugal, Edd's Quinta do Barradas in Algarve, Portugal, and Quinta da Malaca in Algarve, Portugal. The pattern across those roles is breadth without drift: different regions, different expressions, same emphasis on production and judgment. Today, Joana is founder, Oenological Consultancy of Wine ID (since 2006), co-founder of Maçanita Vinhos (since 2011), and winemaker of Morgado do Quintão.
Today
Wine ID remains the consulting base behind Maçanita’s broader practice, while Morgado do Quintão in the Algarve keeps the work tied to place. The wines there read as site-led rather than stylistically imposed, with the vineyard given room to define the result. Maçanita Vinhos in the Douro carries that same range into named bottlings: MAC Tinto, Maçanita Branco, Maçanita Letra F, Maçanita Tinto, Touriga Nacional Em Rosé, and Folgasão dos dois. The range moves across red, white, and rosé, but the logic is consistent: each wine is set up as a distinct expression rather than a generic house style. At Morgado do Quintão, Morgado do Quintão Branco gives the clearest read on the work. Single vineyard, 40-year-old Crato Branco vines, and an explicit claim to Algarve terroir: those are the facts that define the bottle. The result is a wine built to show origin plainly.
