    Portrait of Johan Kruger

    i. Biography

Johan Kruger works at Sterhuis Wines in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa, with a close reading of site and parcel. The preference is specific: small blocks in cool climates, at higher elevation or near the ocean, and vineyards carrying granite subsoil. As Kruger puts it, “I work with small parcels, located in a cool climate – at higher elevation or near the ocean, or both – and with soil with a granite subsoil.” That line sets out the method: restraint, precision, and enough patience to let each parcel show its own character.

    Coming Up

Training at Sonoma-Cutrer gave Kruger an early grounding in hands-on cellar work and observation. He then joined Sterhuis Wines in Stellenbosch as a winemaking team member from 1998, where the daily work of vineyard and cellar became the base layer of the craft. In 2000, he moved to Jordan Winery in Vlottenburg, Stellenbosch as harvest assistant, taking on the pace and pressure that define that season. His responsibilities later expanded to assistant winemaker at Jordan Winery in Vlottenburg, Stellenbosch and cellarmaster at Sterhuis Wines in Bottelary, Stellenbosch from 2005. Read together, those roles show a career built through repetition, timing, and the accumulation of practical judgment. Today, Johan is winemaker of Kruger Family Wines since 2015, still working from the same discipline that shaped the earlier stages of his career.

    Where They Are Now

He also says, “I always pay a good price for the grapes, on the condition that it comes back to the local workers and the community.” The point is not rhetoric; it is allocation. For Kruger, fruit, labour, and community sit in the same ledger, and the economics of a vintage are part of the craft, not separate from it.

    Signature

Johan's signature dishes include Sterhuis Barrel Selection Chardonnay 2004 and 2002 Merlot. Those wines show the range in his register: the Chardonnay framed by barrel influence, the Merlot carrying the weight and maturity of 2002. Together they point to a winemaker working with structure, balance, and the individual demands of each lot.

In Their Words “I work with small parcels, located in a cool climate – at higher elevation or near the ocean, or both – and with soil with a granite subsoil.” “I always pay a good price for the grapes, on the condition that it comes back to the local workers and the community.”
