i. Biography
Since 2020, Jon Bonne has been Managing Editor at RESY, a role built for someone with a wide appetite for stories, wine, and the connective tissue between places and the way people move through them. He came up in journalism on a different beat, writing about politics and the airline industry before wine pulled his attention into a field where reporting, judgment, and editorial voice all matter at once. He has described the project with plain intent: “I’ve created this as a (mostly) one-stop shop to keep recommendations in one place.”
The Path
Wine editing asks for more than tasting notes; it asks for context, restraint, and a working sense of place. At The San Francisco Chronicle, Jon Bonne held the posts of Wine Editor and Chief Wine Critic, a combination that placed him in the middle of both newsroom discipline and the demands of criticism. At JetBlue Airways, he worked as wine consultant, a title that shows how his expertise moved beyond the page and into a setting where taste had to be made legible for a broad audience in motion. Later, as Senior Contributing Editor at PUNCH, he continued shaping a voice that could carry authority without stiffness. Across those roles, the through-line is a style that stays close to reporting while leaving room for reflection. Jon Bonne writes and edits as someone who treats wine as part of a larger system: the table it reaches, the city around it, and the memory it leaves behind. That balance between information and interpretation is what gives his work its usefulness. Today, Jon is Managing Editor of RESY, where that approach fits naturally.
The Work Today
Since 2020, he has been Managing Editor at RESY. In that role, the work is about gathering recommendations into a form that can actually be used—less a pile of notes than a map with some order to it. The emphasis on keeping things in one place points to editorial discipline, but also to a practical kind of hospitality: making the search clearer, the choices easier to read, and the act of deciding less cumbersome. He has also said, “I’ve been maintaining [the Paris map] for about a decade,” which speaks to the long attention this kind of editorial work requires. The value there is in upkeep: a living reference held together over time, not a one-off compilation.
Signature
Jon's signature dishes include The New French Wine, The New California Wine, and The New Wine Rules. Read together, those titles point to a useful tension in his work: canon and revision, tradition and reassessment, and the aim of helping readers understand what is new without losing the older frame around it. The titles themselves have a direct, instructional feel, the kind of books meant to be consulted, revisited, and worked into a reader’s own habits.
In Their Words “I’ve created this as a (mostly) one-stop shop to keep recommendations in one place.” “I’ve been maintaining [the Paris map] for about a decade.”
