Kareem Massoud

The Path

Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania gave Kareem Massoud a rigorous academic base before he moved into private equity as a private equity analyst at a private investment firm in New York. That work sharpened a habit for structure and analysis, but wine remained the more durable field. Returning to the cellar as winemaker at Palmer Vineyards, he brought that outside precision back to a practice already rooted in Paumanok Vineyards. He is now winemaker of Paumanok Vineyards and president of Long Island Wine Country (since 2020), a position that places his work within both a single estate and the wider frame of the region.

The Work Today

At Paumanok, the cellar is treated as a place of stewardship rather than force. Kareem Massoud’s daily work is tied to the estate and its many varieties, with attention directed toward preserving what the vineyard gives. The aim is clarity, character, and consistency, not embellishment for its own sake. That approach keeps the finished wines legible to the fruit and the site behind them.

Signature

Kareem's signature wines include 2019 Cabernet Franc, 2021 Chardonnay, 2022 Dry Rosé, 2014 Tuthill Lane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2022 semi-dry Riesling. The range shows a cellar working across reds, whites, rosé, and Riesling with the same core demands: balance, restraint, and steadiness. At Paumanok Vineyards, the variety is the point, and the bottlings are built to hold that variety without excess handling.

Acclaim

Massoud holds a Diploma in Wines and Spirits, a credential that sits alongside Wharton and his hands-on time at Paumanok Vineyards and Palmer Vineyards. His recognition is tied less to a single specialty than to range. He is associated with making a lot of different kinds of wines and with an emphasis on diversity, stewardship, and quality across several varieties. In trade terms, the value is in consistency across categories: the ability to handle multiple expressions of place without losing the standards that hold them together.
