The Path
Training at Neustadt and Bad Kreuznach gave Karsten Peter the technical base that later defined his cellar work: precision, discipline, and control over timing and balance. Those early stops point to a winemaker focused not just on method, but on the judgment required to shape wine cleanly from start to finish. In 2009, that craft widened into broader responsibility at Gut Hermannsberg in Nahe, where he worked as winemaker and General Manager. The role joined cellar work with estate oversight, placing production decisions and operational direction under the same hand. That experience led into a new phase. Since 2021, Karsten Peter has been founder and winemaker of Weingut Karsten Peter, carrying accumulated experience into a label under his own name. The move reads as continuity rather than departure: the same discipline, now expressed with more direct control over the wines and the pace of the work.
The Work Today
Today, his method is dogma-free and minimal-intervention, with Riesling at the center. The style depends on restraint: using only what the wine needs, and leaving room for vineyard and vintage to remain legible. Minimal intervention here is less about absence than judgment, with the winemaker stepping back when that produces clearer results. In Riesling, that approach has particular value, because the grape rewards nuance, patience, and exact handling.
