The Climb

The path to the cellar ran through research, fieldwork, and the kind of learning that comes from doing the work repeatedly. Early in his career, Brown worked as an extension agent at Oregon State University, moving between the classroom, the lab, and the practical demands of growing things well. He then became founding winemaker at Zaca Mesa Winery, taking on the foundational work that calls for conviction and a steady hand. After that, he served as owner and winemaker at Byron Vineyard & Winery (1984–1990), adding another chapter to a career built on precision and range. Across those roles, the throughline is consistency: good wine comes from a long sequence of careful decisions. Today, Ken is owner and winemaker of Ken Brown Wines.

Today

At Ken Brown Wines in Buellton, Brown continues to work in the same engaged manner that has shaped his career from the start. Pinot Noir remains his specialty, and it is the variety through which his approach reads most clearly: attentive, measured, and grounded in place. His role extends beyond a title or a tasting room presence; it includes direct involvement in every phase of the winegrowing process. That continuity links vineyard and winery, season and bottle, and reflects decades spent refining the same craft.

Signature

Ken's signature wines include 2018 Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir, 2020 Peake Ranch Vineyard Pinot Noir, 2019 La Encantada Vineyard Pinot Noir, 2021 Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir, and 2018 Watch Hill Vineyard Syrah. The list points to a winemaker drawn to site and nuance, to wines that state their position clearly rather than loudly. It also shows the breadth of his range, even as Pinot Noir remains the center of the work.
